GCCS Wellness Policy

I want to remind all of our families about the Greater Clark County Wellness Policy, GCCS Policy #5140.  This policy supports an increased emphasis on nutrition as well as physical activity at all grade levels to enhance the well-being of student.  It outlines the nutritional guidelines for Greater Clark to stay in compliance with federal standards; Federal Law #108-265.

Within this policy there are to be no competitive (fast) foods or carbonated beverages during the school day; this includes lunch times.

The policy also states that celebrations are limited to two per year with healthy food options.  Foods should follow the Smart Snack in School USDA standards.  Our two celebrations this year are October 31 and February 13.

Please note that this does impact birthday celebrations.  We realize birthdays are a special time of the year and we would like celebrate with our students.  It would be appropriate for snacks meeting the USDA smart snacks in schools to be used as a birthday treat.  If you wish to provide a pre-packaged healthy snack for student in your child’s classroom on their birthday this is permissible with teacher authorization.  Please contact your child’s teacher to arrange a date and time to send the snack.

You can visit http://www.regulations.gov for information regarding USDA Smart snacks information.  The Greater Clark Wellness Policy 5140 can be accessed GCCS website under school board policy and bylaws.
